Ensenada Casita Progress

The top is a melange of wonderful paintings done by Lia Katz Robinson's sister Darla. Putting them together doesn't do them justice individually. They are all of Italy--the colors and style will be great on the walls. The fireplace they're propped up on isn't done yet--mantle and tile surround coming up. The next is the outside of the casita thus far. The tree surround has yet to be revamped. The landscaping isn't in yet. The next is a shot of the kitchen counter featuring the tile and some presents that are fitting perfectly--teapot from Nancy and David Bowser and biscotti jar from Serena and Erich. The candle I bought at the Bufadora--famous blowhole. I think I went there with Cindy and Robert Calderon last summer. The shot of the whole kitchenette with Lee at the table shows unfinished work. The pretty hanging lights aren't in yet, just the contractor's utilitarian ones. The handcarved cabinet doors are not there yet. The last couple are the shower and the bathroom sink with the really wild Mexican colors. We got some great furniture that will be delivered soon--bought it at the local furniture store which is really very nice. Range of prices and styles, so we found what we wanted. Great bar stools and matching chairs for the eating table. Sofabed, corner table etc--all should fit well. More pix won't be available till end of Feb when I go back again. That's when I'll do more fixing up with more decorative things. Just what's happened so far is great. Not much relaxing this last trip with all the moving in.

We did get to see (all too briefly) our new Ensenada buddies, Vince and Kathleen Taormina. They will be back in June, so hopefully we'll see them this summer.

More Christening Gown Stuff

My Viking SE was broken, and I was sorely distraught!! Turns out Redlands Sewing Center was there to save the day!! Susan the Viking Queen (Software Maven as well) talked to Bogden, one of the intrepid I-can-fix-anything repair men, and of course he found the jammed threads and I'm good to go! Also, I was informed that this antique trim that I applied to the dress is actually crochet not tatting. Pretty tiny!! Also Lee's sister Jane told me that the busy hands belonged to Susanna Chilingarian Jigamian. I didn't know Baby Elena's great great grandmother's maiden name, so now I do.

Christening Gown

The first pic shows the bottom of the gown The top "lace" is actually handmade tatting done by Lee's grandmother Susanna, the baby's great great grandmother. The middle floral embroidery shows the original embroidery with beading from Serena's wedding dress. The bottom lace is purchased as is. The next pic shows what will be the center of the sleeves. This is an example of the heirloom sewing techniques that I've learned from the Martha Pullen classes and books. It is actually five pieces put together. The left is entredeux, next lace, next "beading" which will be threaded with ribbon, next more lace, next more entredeux. Plain fabric will go on either side, then the whole thing will be cut into the sleeve pattern shape. The last pic is of the machine embroidered cross that I did for the center of the bodice of the dress. I am having fun, a labor of love that I'm really enjoying.

New Grandbaby's Christening Gown Slip

These are closeups of the genealogy squares that will go on the christening gown slip for Serena and Erich's new baby Elena Rosa and all their kids to come, Lord willing. The first is Erich's mom Nancy's parents. The next is his dad Steve's parents.. The next is my parents. The next is Lee's parents. The dates are the wedding anniversaries as much as I can find out. The squares will be pieced with entredeux and lace and placed in the slip. So far I've done squares for Elena's great grandparents. I have the grandparents and parents left to do plus one square for Elena with her baptismal date and a scripture verse: Children are a heritage from the Lord. Ps 127:3 I ran out of embroidery thread in the right color, ordered it online and haven't gotten it yet!! I can't get it locally, doggone it.

More Vail Pix

The first image is the view outside our condo on one of the very snowy days. Actually it got to be more of a whiteout than that. I think that was one of the days we just hung out warm and dry inside. The second shot was from one of the days we braved the storm to catch the marvelous fresh powder. Steve had stuck "Danny the Dinosaur" in his helmet. As you can see, Danny loved the snow and brought some back to the condo with him. We are back in Redlands now, easing our way back to the workaday world with our good friends the Calderon's annual brunch. Yum!

Vail Ski Resort, CO

This is Vail, CO yesterday. Today it's snowing off and on. Very pretty. We've got to get the lead out and get to the slopes!!! Snow was awesome yesterday, should be even better today. That's Lee in the mountain pic, skiing despite 5 stitches in his shin. He got that setting up music for New Year's Eve party at Frank Randolph & Lynn Massey's. We had a paella cookoff, loads of fun and yummy too.

Serena is here with us in Vail. Unfortunately she has a sick body. Steve is with us with his sick mind. Actually Serena has a coughing wheezing fever flu. Elena seems to be hanging in there in utero. Steve is working on his grad school apps. Check out his website stevenlevon.com. Erich is coming in from a retreat in AZ.
